Welcome to the Isle of Wight Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club
We love flying on the Island and hope we can encourage you to come and fly with the Isle of Wight Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club.
Just off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight was the birthplace of Airwave gliders and has been the training ground for a number of top British pilots including: Rob Whittall, John Pendry, Bruce Goldsmith, Barney Barnes, Innes Powell and Sarah Fenwick.
We have a good proportion of flyable days (Shanklin is reputedly the sunniest place in Britain with 2,018.7 hours of sunshine in 2011) and have 12 sites catering for most wind directions.
Our sites include a challenging 35km cliff run, thermal ridges and they all benefit from both land and sea thermals.
For more details on the Island’s sites, check out our Sites Guide.
The club is affiliated with the BHPA (The British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, the UK governing body for hang gliding and paragliding).
